Biogen's Second Act: Complement, Lupus and a Subcutaneous Bet on Alzheimer's
Biogen closed the $5.6B Apellis deal, put an at-home subcutaneous start on Leqembi, and raised 2026 revenue guidance from a decline to growth. The stock now trades above two Wall Street price targets ahead of an Oct. 28 print and a December lupus readout.

S&P 500 Position
Biogen is a mid-sized Health Care/Biotechnology constituent competing against much larger neighbors. Its most direct rival is Eli Lilly, whose IV-only Kisunla splits the anti-amyloid market roughly evenly with Leqembi. The Alzheimer's field is getting crowded: Neurocrine Biosciences just started a Phase 2 Alzheimer's trial, and more than 200 companies are advancing clinical programs. The Apellis deal also puts Biogen into complement-pathway ophthalmology and nephrology, a new competitive arena for the company.
Index Weight: Data unavailable | Rank: Data unavailable. Biogen sits outside the S&P 500's mega-cap tier, with roughly $10B in TTM revenue.
Company Overview
Biogen is retooling around a growth portfolio instead of its legacy multiple sclerosis business. The Q2 2026 numbers show the shift. Skyclarys grew 29% year over year to $168M, Zurzuvae grew 53% to $71M, and Leqembi's global in-market sales reached $184M, up 15%. Meanwhile Tysabri slipped 1%, Vumerity fell 7% and biosimilars dropped 16%. The $5.6B cash acquisition of Apellis, which closed May 14, 2026, added two complement-pathway assets, Syfovre ($162M full-quarter sales) and Empaveli ($46M, up 123%). That moved full-year revenue guidance from a mid-single-digit decline to a mid-single-digit increase. The most interesting technical development in the portfolio is delivery, not molecules. On July 13, 2026, the FDA cleared Leqembi IQLIK as an at-home subcutaneous starting dose. New patients can now begin anti-amyloid therapy without the 18 months of IV infusions previously required before switching. That changes the operating model of Alzheimer's care. Infusion-chair capacity and imaging logistics constrained the first wave of this drug class, and a self-administered start removes part of that bottleneck. Lilly's Kisunla, which management described in January as splitting the market roughly evenly with Leqembi, remains IV-only. Kisunla posted $124M in Q1 sales. Eisai leads Leqembi development and holds final decision-making authority, while Biogen co-commercializes. The immunology pipeline is where analysts are now focused. Litifilimab has registrational SLE data due by the end of 2026. Its 52-week Phase 2 AMETHYST data in cutaneous lupus landed in October, and the CLE Phase 3 reads out in H1 2027. Felzartamab's antibody-mediated rejection Phase 3 also reports in H1 2027. That program drove JPMorgan's upgrade to Overweight, with analyst Chris Schott arguing that Biogen is no longer simply a Leqembi story. Add zorevunersen in Dravet syndrome (Phase 3 in 2027) and salanersen, which received FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation for SMA in June. The result is a company with a dense 2027 catalyst calendar and an antisense neurology backbone underneath it.
Products & Revenue
Q2 2026 total revenue was $2.74B, up 3%. Wholly owned product sales did most of the work at $1.92B, or roughly 70% of the total. Within that, the MS franchise still anchors the top line: Tysabri brought in $451M and Vumerity $197M. Spinraza held at $402M, up 2%. The anti-CD20 line ($514M, up 10%) is high-margin economics Biogen earns without carrying the commercial cost of that franchise, which is why it sits as its own revenue category. Growth comes from Skyclarys, Zurzuvae and the newly acquired Apellis products. Biogen recognized only $97M of Syfovre and $30M of Empaveli because the deal closed mid-quarter, so Q3 is the first full quarter of complement revenue. Leqembi's $184M in global in-market sales converts to just $63.7M of Biogen collaboration revenue, reflecting the 50% profit-share structure with Eisai. Biosimilars (Benepali, Imraldi, Flixabi) are in structural decline at $152.8M, down 16%.
Product Revenues (ex-Biosimilars) (64.5%): Wholly owned neurology, neuromuscular and complement products, including Tysabri, Vumerity, Spinraza, Skyclarys, Zurzuvae and the post-close Apellis assets Syfovre and Empaveli. This bucket is where the portfolio rotation from MS to rare disease and complement is happening.
Anti-CD20 Therapeutic Programs (18.7%): Biogen's economic share of anti-CD20 antibody franchises, at $513.5M in Q2 and up 10% year over year. It is a royalty-like stream with no commercial infrastructure cost to Biogen.
Contract Manufacturing, Royalty & Other (8.8%): Biologics manufacturing capacity sold to third parties plus royalty income, totaling $242.4M. It monetizes Biogen's large-molecule manufacturing footprint.
Biosimilars (5.6%): Anti-TNF biosimilars Benepali, Imraldi and Flixabi, at $152.8M and down 15.9% as pricing pressure erodes the line.
Alzheimer's Collaboration Revenues (2.3%): Biogen's 50% share of Leqembi economics under the Eisai partnership, totaling $63.7M. In-market sales of $184M overstate what reaches Biogen's top line.
Based on Q2 2026 results (quarter ended June 30, 2026) per Biogen's Form 8-K press release, the Q2 earnings call, and Zacks' revenue-line breakdown. Percentages are computed against $2.74B total Q2 revenue. Biosimilars are carved out of product revenues as a memo line.
Leadership
Christopher A. Viehbacher
CEO since 2022. Viehbacher, 65, has been President, CEO and a board member since November 2022. He has run Biogen as a portfolio-rotation operator, pairing aggressive business development like the $5.6B Apellis deal with a pipeline pivot into immunology and nephrology. On the Q2 2026 call he signaled a slower M&A pace in the near term, saying Biogen has what it needs to grow.
Priya Singhal, M.D., M.P.H., Executive Vice President, Head of Development: She owns execution on the 2026–2027 readout wall: litifilimab in SLE and CLE, felzartamab in AMR, and zorevunersen in Dravet syndrome. Biogen's re-rating depends on her clinical programs delivering.
Jane Grogan, Ph.D., Executive Vice President, Head of Research: She has led research since 2023 and is responsible for the early pipeline that must eventually replace both the MS cash flows and the Leqembi profit share.
Robin Kramer, Chief Financial Officer: She manages a balance sheet carrying $6.8B in net debt after Apellis, with a stated goal of full de-leveraging by the end of 2027 and buybacks paused.
The AI Angle
Partnered AI bets, no flagship platform
Biogen has not shipped a marquee AI product, and the research turned up no named 2026 AI initiatives or AI leadership hires. Its AI footprint is a set of external collaborations, most of them launched in 2021–2022 and routed through the Biogen Digital Health unit. Tech readers should treat it as a company that rents ML capability rather than builds it. The most strategically coherent deal is with Envisagenics. Biogen gained access to the SpliceCore platform's ML-derived database of roughly seven million potential RNA splicing errors. That maps directly onto Biogen's antisense oligonucleotide franchise: Spinraza, salanersen (Breakthrough Therapy designation for SMA in June 2026) and zorevunersen are all molecules that modulate RNA. Computational target discovery in splicing biology is the clearest place where ML can feed Biogen's existing chemistry engine. On the digital-health side, Biogen agreed to invest up to $15M in TheraPanacea convertible debt to co-develop ML/AI tools in neuroscience. In February 2022, Mila, the Quebec AI Institute, announced a three-year collaboration with Biogen Digital Health aimed at improving the probability of success of therapy development. That stated term has since run its course, and the research shows no announced renewal. The model is build-light and buy-via-partnership: academic AI labs and venture-style minority stakes instead of an internal foundation-model or large compute effort. The risk is plain. As the Alzheimer's field crowds with more than 200 companies running clinical programs, and as Biogen moves into crowded immunology indications like lupus and transplant rejection, AI-native competitors will compress discovery timelines. Biogen's edge today is clinical execution, delivery engineering like the subcutaneous Leqembi start, and RNA chemistry, not data science. Without a visible 2026 AI program, it depends on partners for a capability its peers are increasingly bringing in-house.
Financial Snapshot
Revenue (TTM): $9.95B (TTM through June 30, 2026) | Net Income: $0.84B (TTM net income)
Margins: Gross: data unavailable; operating: data unavailable; net 8.4% (TTM)
Q2 2026 adjusted EPS of $3.60 beat consensus, which ranged from $3.04 to $3.17 depending on the source. EPS still fell 34% year over year on deal-related charges and higher R&D. Reported FY2026 EPS guidance fell from $15.25–$16.25 to $12.00–$13.00, driven by about $3.00 of acquired IPR&D and milestone charges and about $0.85 of Apellis dilution. The underlying business guide actually rose by $0.60. Capital allocation now prioritizes de-leveraging: Biogen made no share repurchases in H1 2026, about $2.1B remains under the 2020 authorization, and management targets full de-leveraging by the end of 2027.
1-Year Performance
BIIB trades at $250.69. Year-over-year performance data is unavailable. The stock now sits above BofA's new $244 target and TD Cowen's $250 target, and below JPMorgan's $300 target.
The latest leg up came from sell-side re-rating, not earnings. Shares jumped 5% on Oct. 22 after BofA raised its target to $244 from $219 (rating kept at Neutral). TD Cowen lifted its target to $250 from $225, and JPMorgan upgraded to Overweight with a target raised from $210 to $300 on the strength of felzartamab. Q3 results arrive Oct. 28 before the open, with consensus diluted EPS of $2.10 versus $4.81 a year ago; another source puts consensus at $1.98 on $2.64B revenue. BofA expects a relatively quiet quarter, so the real catalyst is December's litifilimab SLE data.
